Job Description:

SSAI is seeking a Senior Electrical/Electronics Engineer to provide expertise on the electrical/electronics team in the development of spaceflight remote sensing instruments.  The applicant must have extensive experience designing, manufacturing, and testing of spaceflight (or similar) electrical/electronic systems or subsystems.  Additional experience with system/subsystem integration and test at all levels (board, subsystem, and flight instrument), environmental testing (thermal vacuum, EMI/EMC, vibration), and satellite integration is desired. The responsibilities include:

  • Provides expertise on the electrical and electronic subsystem team in the areas of design, integration and test (I&T), verification and assessment of the instruments’ electrical/electronic subsystem and components to achieve the science requirements in a cost and schedule constrained environment.
  • Provide expert recommendations to the project manager and senior management (contractor and NASA) on the electrical/electronic subsystem performance, achievement of schedule objectives, development and impact of alternative design approaches and resolution of design and integration problems.
  • Conduct design analyses to ensure the electrical/electronic subsystems are meeting design specifications.  Lead the reviews and assessment of contractor designs for compliance with requirements and assist in anomaly diagnosis and resolution.  Ability to perform circuit design and analysis.
  • Support electrical/electronic subsystem I&T within the instrument and with the spacecraft.  Ensures proper I&T requirements are defined, planned, and executed.  Develops alternatives and impact assessment to varying test and integration concerns.  Ensures the verification of electrical/electronic subsystem requirements.
  • Designs and develops electronic subsystems, both hardware and/or software, for electrical/electronic subsystems, instruments and payload systems utilizing studies, simulation, experimentation, testing and evaluation, and Computer-Aided Design (CAD) tools such as: Altium, OrCAD, MathLab, PSPICE, Labview.
  • Strong understanding and implantation of risk assessment and risk mitigation as it applies to the electrical/electronic subsystem and its integration with the instrument and spacecraft.
  • Perform the duties associated with the electrical/electronic subsystem including status reporting and controlling schedules for spares, life test units, Engineering Development Units, flight modules, Ground Support Equipment, and integration and test milestones.  In addition, be able to effectively communicate electrical/electronic subsystem product status during weekly and monthly project planning and status meetings.
  • Provide expert technical and analytical support to periodic and recurring meetings such as technical interchanges, configuration control board, safety and mission assurance, and program and project reviews to all levels of management with in industry and NASA. Periodic travel will be required to other NASA centers and instrument and instrument subsystem contractor facilities primarily in the USA; however, some international travel may be required.
  • Strong analytical ability to find and gather facts with attention to details and ability to deduct electrical/electronic subsystem design and integration issues and provide timely solutions based on limited data.
  • Strong interpersonal skills such as oral and written communications, technical writing and presentation skills are required to communicate within the project(s) and all levels of management within the industry and NASA.
Required Qualifications:
  • This position requires a minimum of Bachelor of Science degree in electrical engineering and 7 years (10 years preferred) of relevant electrical/electronic design experience related to space and/or airborne instruments (or similar).
  • Experience with science instrument (or similar) integration and test with ground, aircraft and space flight electrical/electronic subsystems design is also required.
  • Experience with flight procedure processes related to electrical/electronics subsystems is necessary.
  • Demonstrated ability to lead a team of engineers and scientists in a complex subsystem development and integration.
  • Strong analytical skills with attention to details that entail requirements review, analysis to support new or heritage component selections, risk assessment and mitigation, and development of alternative design and/or integration and test approaches.
  • Knowledge and use of design and CAD software, e.g., Altium, PSPICE
  • Knowledge and use of Microsoft Office required.
Desired Qualifications:
  • Master of Science degree (or higher) in electrical engineering is desired
  • Demonstrated leadership of a highly skilled team in a complex development through the integration and test phase of development.
