Job Description:
SSAI is seeking a motivated and outgoing scientific programmer/analyst to support an exciting Group on Earth Observations (GEO) Human Planet NASA Applied Sciences Project.  This is a one-of-a-kind opportunity to support NASA and other scientists as they develop new applications for NASA’s “Black Marble” product.  This experimental product has recently been used to help first responders focus their recovery efforts after Hurricane Maria ravaged Caribbean islands.  Among others, the incumbent will perform the following tasks.

  • Create or coordinate the preparation of graphics and animations for science talks (e.g., Hyperwall), training materials and for research articles prepared by the NASA Black Marble science team
  • Support Coordination of Black Marble training exercises; as needed (may require travel)
  • Handle end-user requests for customized Black Marble products in GIS friendly and analysis ready formats
  • Handle requests from stakeholders; such as NASA’s Disaster Response Program, the Earth Observing System Data and Information System (EOSDIS)-Google Partnership team, NASA’s Earth Observatory, NASA HQ, and Goddard Earth Science Division teams
  • Coordinate with the data archive, distribution and processing teams to assemble product usage statistics
  • Assemble a database of works cited, news features, and project highlights
  • Develop new content for the product webpage
Required Qualifications:
  • Master’s and 3 years of experience or PhD in Earth Sciences with some background in remote sensing.
  • Expertise using Python for Remote Sensing data
  • Significant QGIS or ESRI-ArcGIS experience
  • Must be a self-starter and excellent communicator with the ability to communicate with many project stakeholders and end users
  • ENVI or equivalent experience
Desired Qualifications:
  • IDL Software / GDAL expertise
  • Remote Sensing using Nighttime Lights Products
  • Knowledge of NASA/NOAA/USGS/European Space Agency Remote Sensing Data Products and Data Formats (MODIS, VIIRS, Landsat-8, and Sentinel-2)
  • Remote Sensing Data Visualization Expertise (Adobe Photoshop or similar)
  • Knowledge of Sustainable Urban Development topics
  • Knowledge of Natural Disasters and Risk Reduction topics
  • Use of Remote Sensing data to address social, economic, and environmental issues impacting human settlements
