Job Description:

SSAI has multiple openings on a fully-funded NASA project for Engineers who enjoy getting their hands dirty working on cutting-edge Earth Science projects and love to travel to off-the-beaten path locations around the globe.

The Project team has developed an airborne, full-waveform, scanning laser altimeter. By combining precise GPS and attitude sensor data with the lidar range and return waveforms, the system produces large area maps of surface topography, and the vertical height and structure of any overlying vegetation. Data are routinely used by a wide range of science communities for ecological, cryospheric, biodiversity, hydrology and solid earth applications.  The goal of this effort is to increase the availability, volume, frequency and quality of waveform-based lidar scientific-quality data products. To this end, a state of the art waveform lidar sensor and data processing system based on the existing Project sensor is currently under development and due to come online during the summer of 2017.

We seek to recruit individuals with strong programming, math, or engineering skills to join our team to support instrument design and test, field campaigns to global locations, and data analysis. This is an outstanding opportunity for a motivated individual to get involved with cutting edge research.

Duties in support of the project may include any or all of the following:

  • Participate on deployments of the scientific instrument: support/install instrument on various research aircraft; support operations of the instrument on manned deployments; assure data is properly captured and returned to the facility.Deployments may be 2-6 weeks in length, with several deployments per year anticipated.
  • Support test, debug, and redesign of the instrument as needed
  • Support scientific data processing for NASA in collaboration with and under the direction of the existing project team.
  • Analyze large data sets from deployments and package data products for the project science team.
  • Provide support for scientists and other users to access and utilize the instrument, from proposal development through data acquisition and product delivery.
Required Qualifications:
  • B.S. degree in Electrical, Optical, or Aerospace Engineering with 3+ years of experience or equivalent combination of work and academic experience
  • Ability to independently debug hardware and software problems and develop solutions
  • Good communications skills
  • Ability to work in a team environment.
  • Experience with one or more of the following: MATLAB, IDL, Python, GIS
  • Ability to travel for up to 4 weeks at a time
Desired Qualifications:
  • M.S. Degree in Electrical or Aerospace Engineering
  • Experience with georectification, airborne remote sensing, Linux-based computers, and aircraft equipment operations is a plus
  • Strong math and programming skills
