SSAI is seeking a scientific programmer to support customers at NASA’s Goddard Space Flight Center in Greenbelt, MD. As a member of the “Dark-Target” aerosol retrieval team, the successful applicant will develop, refine, maintain, and evaluate aerosol retrieval algorithms and products from MODIS, VIIRS, and other satellite sensors.

This position requires a highly motivated individual with directly-relevant scientific programming and software development experience. Experience in Earth Sciences (preferably atmospheric science), remote sensing algorithm development, and converting mathematical algorithms to coded prototypes in a fast paced environment are highly desirable.

Applicants should have knowledge of and experience with life-cycle software development methodologies, including requirements analysis, design, prototyping, coding, unit testing, integration, and test. The ideal candidate will have the ability to convert science goals into software requirements, work with scientists to develop and improve algorithms, and produce code that will successfully run in a data production environment. The ability to solve complex problems in a collaborative environment is highly desired and the successful candidate will also be expected to work independently in their area of expertise.

Required Qualifications:
  • B.S. in the Physical Sciences (Atmospheric, Hydrology, Remote Sensing, Geophysics, Physics) or Computer Science with two years of directly-relevant scientific software development experience or equivalent combination of education and experience
  • Two or more years’ programming experience in Fortran, IDL, C, and Python in a Linux/Unix environment
  • Makefile and shell scripting experience
  • Experience with HDF and other remote sensing data formats
  • Excellent oral and written communication skills and proven ability to work in a team environment
  • Ability to independently work through situational issues and use problem solving skills to achieve desired project outcome
  • Eligibility to work in the US and ability to meet NASA's background investigation requirements for IT and physical access to NASA facilities
