Job Description:

Science Systems and Applications, Inc. (SSAI) is looking for an individual to support the NASA Plankton, Aerosol, Cloud, ocean Ecosystem (PACE) Project at NASA's Goddard Space Flight Center (GSFC), in particular the Project Scientists, by developing communications content for, and executing events on behalf of, the PACE mission. This position has the following responsibilities:

  • Creation of digital content such as presentation material, NASA Hyperwall material, imagery, animations/visualizations, and social media content.

  • Science writing as directed by the Project, likely to include a monthly blog that highlights news and component/element-level activities, as well as mission history. The individual will be expected to interview component/element teams, and to conceive of and develop independent stories in support of the mission.

  • Interaction and collaboration with the PACE Project Web and Applications teams and community Science and Applications and System Vicarious Calibration teams to develop content relevant to their activities in support of the mission.

  • Interaction and collaboration with the GSFC Public Affairs Office to develop agency-level news articles, press releases, and other print media.

  • Interaction and collaboration with the GSFC media and production teams to develop digital and related content, such as animations/visualizations

  • Creation of, preparation and set-up for, and execution of Center, agency, meeting/conference, and public events including, but not limited to, town halls, NASA/mission booth activities, and interactive engagement with the community.
Required Qualifications:
  • B.S. or equivalent in a physical science, journalism, communications, or education field and 3+ years of experience translating technical/scientific information into communications for the public, or equivalent combination of education and experience
  • Excellent written and oral communication skills.
  • Broad, demonstrated understanding of Earth system science.
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office (Word, Excel, Powerpoint).
  • Experience with graphics design and layout and knowledge of computer-aided graphics software such as the Adobe Creative Suite (Photoshop, Illustrator, Dreamweaver, In Design, and Acrobat).
  • Experience with social media tools, platforms, and online content management.
Desired Qualifications:
  • Previous experience working on a NASA mission or project helpful, but not required.
  • Experience in development of a communications strategy also helpful, but not required.
