SSAI Dives into Cloud Computing

In response to the dramatic growth of earth observation information and subsequent high-data-volume processing over recent years, NASA’s Earth Science Data Systems (ESDS) Program has adopted a strategic vision to develop and operate multiple components of the Earth Observing System Data and Information System (EOSDIS) in a commercial cloud environment. SSAI is working hand in hand with NASA colleagues to make this transition successful.

Integrated with the NASA-Compliant General Application Platform (NGAP), Project Cumulus was implemented to move data to the cloud for processing and dissemination. NGAP is a custom-built cloud optimized platform, which provides highly flexible cloud native infrastructure, NASA compliant IT Security controls, networking services, and business cost control in Amazon Web Services (AWS). Together, Cumulus and NGAP make up the Earthdata Cloud. 

The NASA Earthdata Cloud project has started transitioning components of NASA’s EOSDIS Distributed Active Archive Centers (DAACs) from on premise to cloud computing platforms beginning with Amazon Web Services (AWS). 

SSAI is working hand in hand with NASA colleagues to transition EOSDIS data to a cloud environment. *Attribute: Karthikbl25, CC BY-SA 4.0 via Wikimedia Commons SSAI is supporting this endeavor by providing software and cloud engineering expertise for transitioning the Level-1 and Atmosphere Archive & Distribution System (LAADS) DAAC, coordinating with other DAAC cloud development teams within a Scaled Agile Framework (SAFe), and utilizing the EOSDIS Cumulus Project cloud system.  

Planning has already commenced with goals of installing the LAADS DAAC Cumulus system instance, as well as demonstrating high priority end-to-end satellite product ingest and EOSDIS Common Metadata Repository (CMR) cataloging by the end of 2021. Thus far, the project remains on schedule and is progressing as expected. 

By playing a critical role in placing the EOSDIS data archive collectively in the cloud, SSAI is helping to improve management and accessibility of these data while also expediting science discovery for data users—a task much appreciated by the ESDS Program, stakeholders, and users alike.
